About Sarasota

Sarasota, located in Florida, USA, is a small holiday town that stands out with sea, culture, art and history tourism. Situated on the southwest of the state, around a lagoon on the Sarasota Gulf coast in the Gulf of Mexico, the city is a complete tourism paradise with its climate, beaches and facilities. The barrier islands separating the Sarasota Gulf coast and gulf from the Gulf of Mexico, Lido Key and Siesta Key have world-class reputation for their beach and sand quality. Also, St. Armand Key, Otter Key, Coon Key, Longboat Key and Bird Key islands are all within the boundaries of Sarasota. Longboat Key is the largest barrier island in this island group, also called “Key Island”. Sarasota and its immediate surroundings were discovered by Spanish explorers in the 16th century and the area was called “Zara Zote”. The sheltered natural harbor attracted fishermen and merchants, and the population in the city began to increase over time. The city rapidly grew in the 18th century as a result of increased trade with Cuba and took the name “Sarasota”; it earned the status of “city” in 1913.

The most important event that brought Sarasota to the world's agenda, apart from stunning tourism activities, was the visit of US President George W. Bush on September 11, 2001 to a primary school in the city during the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York. President Bush received news of the first attack in Emma E. Booker Elementary School in this town. The city, which has a vibrant atmosphere throughout the year with its cultural, artistic and tourism activities, hosts eye-catching tourist attractions such as the Ringling Museum, beaches of Siesta Key and Lido Key Island, Sarasota Jungle Gardens, Circus Museum, Ca 'd'Zan Manor, Classic Car Museum, Historical Asolo Theater, Historic Spanish Point and Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. The city is dominated by humid subtropical climate effect, and thus has hot summers, hot winters and high humidity throughout the year. Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport is located 4.8 kilometers north of the city.
