About Billund
Billund is a small town located in Jutland, Denmark. Billund’s most world-renowned feature is the fact that it is home to famous toy brand, Lego’s theme park Legoland. Billund’s Legoland opened in 1968 and is the world’s largest one today. The toy brand also has its head offices in Billund. Billund’s establishment dates far back in history with its name first appearing in historical documents in 1291, as a small settlement where the Green Church community lived.
The face of the town, which received its name in 1510, began to change in 1916 with investments by Ole Kirk Christiansen, who later created the Lego Toy Brand. Christiansen purchased a Billund furniture factory and began making small toys from the scraps of the wood products. In 1934 he established the Lego factory, shifting all toy production to this facility. Following this investment by Christiansen, new factories began opening in the city towards the end of the 1930’s and Billund began to develop economically. Today the city is very popular among families with kids and each year the number of tourists coming to visit Legoland increases. Therefore the city’s most popular tourist destination is Legoland, which also features an activity center and waterpark within.
Among other tourist attractions are the city’s zoo, Kongernes Jelling, and the Vandel Bunker-Museum. Due to its location in the northernmost part of Europe the city has a cold and temperate climate with heavy rainfall during the summer and winter. The Billund Airport is located 1.9 km northeast of the city.
