About Tekirdag
Situated on the Thrace peninsula and bordering the Marmara Sea, Tekirdağ is home to 870,000 people.
As a greater portion of the city lies along the Marmara coast, the city has a predominantly Mediterranean climate. Summers are hot and winters mild.
With the first known settlements dating back to thousands of years B.C., Tekirdağ has been home to many states including the Phrygians, Hittites, Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans. Before the population exchange between Greece and Turkey after World War I, half of this city's inhabitants were Greek. It has sadly lost this cultural diversity, but there are still historical places of interest in Tekirdag such as the Rakoczi Museum, Tekirdağ Archeological and Ethnographic Museum, Çorlu Castle, and the Hora Lighthouse.
The touristic neighborhoods of Şarköy and Kumbağ play an important role in promoting the city. Many local tourists flock to these areas in the summer. One of the things that first comes to mind when you think of Tekirdağ is its special meatballs. It is also famous for its çılbır (boiled eggs with yoghurt) and ciğer sarması (minced liver wrapped in lamb’s fat).
There are flights to the Tekirdağ Çorlu Airport; and you can reach the city by rail, sea and road, as well. The city is also a few hours' drive from Istanbul.
