About Kosice
Located in eastern Slovakia, on the banks of the Hornad River, Kosice is the second largest city in the country. The historic city, which is situated near the Hungarian border, was first mentioned in writing in 1230. Today it is Slovakia’s economic and cultural center; in 2013 it was titled the European Capital of Culture, along with Marseille.
Main tourist attractions in the city include the East Slovak Museum, East Slovak Gallery, Slovak Technical Museum, St. Elisabeth Cathedral, Saint Michael’s Chapel, and the Kosice Zoo. The ruins of Spiš Castle, about an hour away by car, are worth a visit as well. The city is situated between the fertile agricultural plains to the east and the Slovak Ore Mountains, rich with mineral deposits, to the west. Therefore, the city is both a center for heavy industry and a market for agricultural products.
The various hot springs and quaint villages located nearby are popular among tourists. Kosice has one of the country’s oldest urban transportation systems. Trams, buses, and trolleybuses provide the public transportation in the city. The city stands out for its various museums. The Executioner’s Bastion, which is located in the center of the city and used as a museum today, and Miklus’s Prison, are particularly interesting architectural structures. Tourists must visit the Spiš Castle as it features magnificent architecture and scenic views and is one of the largest castles in Europe.
The Kosice International Airport serves the city, offering regular direct flights from various cities in Europe. The airport is located 15-20 minutes from the city center; there are several different routes you can take to reach the city center from the airport.
