About Kefallinia
Kefalonia is located on the western coast of Greece. It is the largest of the Ionian Islands and has the most beautiful beaches of the Greek islands, with wonderful coves, rocky coastlines, and sand and pebble beaches. It was once voted 10th in a world scenic beauty poll for its natural beauty. With a population of 42 thousand it is the 6th largest Greek island. Among the many natural beauties waiting to be discovered on the island of Kefalonia the first that comes to mind is the Dragoti Cave, which has managed to stay cool for thousands of years and features vibrant stalactites and stalagmites. After exploring the cave enjoy a short boat ride to Melissina Lake.
The island is also home to 12 blue flag beaches. Argostoli, the largest city on the island and considered the capital, gets especially crowded in the summer. The city’s main center, Vallianos Square, has many cafes and restaurants and is very popular among the locals and tourists in the evenings. Cobbled Street is where you can find many shops and also explore the Saint Spyridon Church, clock tower, and Botanical Gardens, as they are all within walking distance.
Among other places to visit in the city are the Archaeological Museum of Argostoli, which features interesting archaeological remains like swords, sculptures, coins and ceramic goods dating back to the Hellenistic and Roman era, and the Korgialenios History & Folklore Museum, which exhibits photographs belonging to Kefalonian history in a 19th century building. There are different churches and cemeteries in various villages on the island. The Kefalonia Airport is located 7 km from Argostoli in the Svoronata Village. In addition to serving flights from Athens, it serves charter flights and some international flights. It is especially busy in the summers. To reach various cities or villages on the island we would recommend renting a car or taking a taxi since there is no public transportation, like buses or trains.
Transportation to Kefallinia City Center from Airport
Kefalonia - Anna Pollatou Airport
There is no public transport to reach the city center from the Kefalonia International Airport, which is a modest airport 17 kilometers south of the city center. For this reason, you have to choose between taxis or rental cars to get to the city.
Taxi
A local firm takes over taxi service at Kefalonia Airport. There is a chart, which is obliged to be hung on the windshields of the taxis working at the airport, showing the fixed fee information determined for arriving the city center and other parts of the city from the airport. When you hire a taxi, you will be asked about your destination and to pay the specified fare before the trip. Thus, the use of taximeters is trying to be prevented in order not to damage passengers financially. The specified fare changes in the summer and winter months.
Car Rental
Considering the difficulty to find a taxi at Kefalonia Airport and the advantage of having a private car in this holiday city, the usage of rental cars increases during summer. You can rent a car from Prima Motors, Kokolis Travel, Hertz and Europcar 24 hours a day. Those who want to rent an economical vehicle can book cars at the appropriate prices from the internet sites of these companies.
