About Baucau
Baucau is the second-largest city in the Democratic Republic of East Timor, located 122 kilometers to the east of the capital Dili. According to the 2010 census the city’s population was 16 thousand. Baucau features historic ruins as well as homes and churches dating back to the Portuguese colonial era. One of those old buildings is the Pousada de Baucau, a big pink hotel with a restaurant featuring wonderful views of the ocean. There is also a charming shop that sells handmade crafts located next to the hotel. Despite the high unemployment rate, especially among the city’s youth, the shops, restaurants, and street markets do very well.
One of Baucau’s leading organizations is the Baucau Teachers College. Under the management of the Diocese, the institution provides teacher education for untrained teachers or those who want to become teachers in the future. It is known to have more than 300 graduates throughout the country. The Baucau Airport has the largest runway in the city.
