About Agri
Agri is one of the coldest and highest cities in Turkey. Turkey’s highest mountain, Mount Ararat, which has an altitude of 5137 m, is also located within the borders of this province. Mentioned in holy books as well, this mountain is believed to be the place Noah landed with his ark while fleeing from the Great Flood. Mount Ararat is also a mountaineering destination, though the difficulty level of the climb is rated high.
The Ishak Pasha Palace is among the places to visit in Ağrı other than the mountain. A work of the Tulip Period, it is the most grandiose palace built after the Topkapi Palace in the more recent times of the Ottoman Empire. Other highlights to see are the Meteor Crater, Meya Caves, and Noah’s Ark. A quite cold continental climate predominates in the city. Summers are dry whereas winters are snowy. Agriculture and animal husbandry are the usual means of livelihood for most of the inhabitants.
The Ağrı Airport is 8.5 km from the city center, which can be reached by bus or taxi.
