Located on the south-west of Tunisia, Tozeur is in the middle of the Sahara Desert. However, Tozeur’s oasis features put it in a very remarkable position as the city is famous for its gigantic palm grove spreading over an area of two thousand hectares and geometric brick houses. Tozeur is a city well known to Star Wars fans. A significant part of the series was filmed in sets in Tozeur, many natural, few human made. The protoganist’s  house which looks like an igloo in the middle of a desert is located in Chott el Djerid, near the city. The canyon in which the movie was filmed has recently been called as the Star Wars Canyon.  Tozeur was an important caravan transit point during the Roman Empire period, and hosted many civilizations throughout the history. In or around the city, there are many examples of Roman, Greek or Ottoman period.

You will see the most prominent examples of the traditional Tunisian architectural style in the city, where the desert sand colored buildings are decorated with the bricks. This traditional architecture is given spirit by the green texture, and the city has become one of the  country’s rapidly growing tourism centers. Desert trips on camels are city’s main tourism activities. Tozeur’s historical old city Medina, the salt lake Chott el Djerid, which dries completely in summertime, Dar Cherait Museum, giant Echebbi Statue in Ras al-Ain, Al Ferdous Mosque, golf courses, the zoo and the locations where Star Wars was filmed are city’s other attractions. Desert climate is dominant in the city, summers are hot while winters are mild. Tozeur Nefta International Airport is located 4.8 kilometers northwest of the city.
